God,your exceedingly great reward!

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” (Genesis 15:1 NKJV)
Abraham was a man of substance and position. He was also a man of obedience and submission to The Lord. He was well respected and very spiritual. But a time came in His life that if he was going to walk faithfully in God's plan for men’s salvation, he needed more than those things that made him look successful. He needed to resubmit himself to what God had for him, not the things that God's favor had attained for him. So in Genesis we see what God really had for Abraham in order for him to carry the seed that would ultimately crush the serpent’s head, which would be brought forth in his yet to arrive son Isaac. The things he had accumulated up till now, the riches, flocks, servants, position in the community, education, and respect among men, were not the necessary tools for the job to be done. For Abraham, his need was just one thing. He needed God to be his portion, or his very great reward.
He had been walking with God, but now the time had come for God to reveal His plan to Abraham and for Abraham to walk in it. And the blessings he had received by his obedience of leaving his home, land and people, were not sufficient for him to carry the seed or the promise for men's salvation.
God alone offered the necessary provision and resources for what Abraham needed for this work. Abraham had to take his eyes off of how far he had come and see the future of where God wanted to take him, realizing he did not have any resource to accomplish this. The new insight for Abraham was God would be his resource for the work that lay ahead. No more trusting in the things that surrounded him, they could not produce the child, or the seed by which God would save all men and make Abraham descendants to be like the stars in the sky.
This is also so true for us.
We have become dependent on what we have accomplished or what we long to accomplish in our lives to serve God. But what God has for us to do is so much bigger than who we have become or long to be. Our prayers reflect our superficial understanding of what God is doing in our generation. What God wants to do now is too big for our feeble lives to contain it or help him do it. We must begin to pray for understanding that we need God as our reward and drop all the other things we have picked up in our lives that we use to help Him. He doesn't need those things. He needs us to surrender all hope and determination that we can do the work ahead of us and seek His portion over our lives.
Our arrogance has led us to believe we can possibly do the work, but just like Abraham we are barren. Unless God helps us and we seek Him for our lives to fulfill His purposes, what would have saved men and women in these days will lie dormant and unfulfilled. May The Lord help us to release our petty desires are for human comfort and care, and instead see the seed of men's salvation, Jesus, that we must carry, trusting only in what He can give us and make provision for in our lives in Jesus Name. Amen
